Ex-FBI Director Appointed “Settlement Master” in Volkswagen Litigation

According to Reuters (1/19, Shepardson), U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer has appointed Robert S. Mueller as “settlement master” to oversee a settlement program for more than 500 U.S. lawsuits against VW in connection with the ongoing emissions scandal. The judge said Mueller will “use his considerable experience and judgment to facilitate settlement discussions among the various parties in these complex matters.” Mueller is a lawyer and former director of the FBI. There are also rumors that VW has hired lawyer Ken Feinberg to develop a claims program and has plans to hire former FBI head Louis Freeh to help the company navigate the U.S. investigation. A company representative declined to confirm Freeh’s appointment.
